Police: Drunk driver crashes head-on into semi

PLEASANT HILL, Ore. - A drunk driver crashed his Suburban head-on into a semi truck Wednesday night, injuring both drivers, Oregon State Police said.

Kenneth W. Hayes, 68, of Oakridge faces charges of DUII, Reckless Driving, and Recklessly Endangering Another Person.

Investigators said Hayes was eastbound on Highway 58 east of Pleasant Hill just before 8 p.m. when his 1999 Chevrolet Suburban crossed the centerline and collided head-on with an oncoming semi truck pulling a trailer loaded with lettuce.

The crash sent both Hayes and trucker Wilfrido Gomez, 52, of San Bernardino, California, to Sacred Heart Medical Center at RiverBend in Springfield with non-life threatening injuries, police said.

The wreckage blocked the highway for about an hour.

Firefighters from Springfield, Lowell, Pleasant Hill and Dexter responded to assistatthe scene.

PLEASANT HILL, Ore. - A semi truck crash blocked both lanes of Highway 58 on Wednesday night east of Pleasant Hill.

Initial reports indicate at least one person was injured.

No word yet on what caused the crash.
