Police: 3-car pileup pushes pickup in front of semi-truck

OAKRIDGE, Ore. -- A man was seriously injured Sunday evening after a three-car pileup sent his pickup into oncoming traffic on Highway 58, state police officials said.

Emergency crews responded to the crash at around 4:40 p.m. Sunday near the intersection of Highway 58 at Westfir Road, about two miles west of Oakridge.

Officials said that three vehicles were headed east on the highway when they were involved in a chain reaction crash, Oregon State Police Lieutenant Greg Hastings said.

The impact of the crash pushed a pickup truck carrying a camper into the opposite lane where it was hit by a westbound semi-truck.

The Oakridge Fire Department helped pull the driver from his wrecked pickup; he was taken to Sacred Heart at Riverbend with serious but non-life threatening injuries.

Officials said that no other injuries were reported.

The Oregon Department of Transportation reported that the crash blocked the roadway in both directions. They reported the highway reopened nearly three hours later.
