Pedestrian hit, killed along Highway 101 north of Florence
FLORENCE, Ore. -- A man was hit and killed on Highway 101 Monday when he moved into traffic about two miles north of Florence, Oregon State Police said.
Police responded to milepost 187 around 11:50 p.m. Monday to find a 48-year-old man had been hit by a Honda Civic.
The man was taken to PeaceHealth Peace Harbor Medical Center where he was later pronounced deceased, officials said.
Crash investigators said the victim was a passenger in a vehicle heading to a local store with his mother and her friend. As the came up to Highway 101 from a private driveway, the man got out and started walking toward the road.
Police officials said they believe the man moved into the road in front of the northbound Honda Civic.
The Civic's 19-year-old male driver reportedly hit the brakes and tried to veer away, but the car hit the man.
Police closed part of the highway for nearly 4 hours while emergency crews worked in the area.
