Officials investigate fire at pallet company in Eugene
EUGENE, Ore. -- Lane County Sheriff's Office is investigating an arson and possible related break-in Tuesday morning at Eugene Pallet Enterprises off West Beacon Drive.
The call came in at 5:55 a.m. Tuesday.
Morning employees at Eugene Pallet Enterprises called fire authorities to report smoke along with others who reported seeing a lot of smoke in the building.
Firefighters say they prepared for the worst when they saw the smoke inside a pallet company.
Despite the smoky conditions, it turned out to be a rather small fire in a downstairs office area.
Officials with Lane Fire Authority say it was difficult to access because of difficulty getting into the downstairs. They say the building is built like a daylight basement, with two separate areas.
“We have the sheriff's department here investigating a possible break-in,” said Lane Fire Authority Chief Terry Ney. “We don't know if that's related to the fire or not because we haven't determined the cause.”
“Very distraught - disgusted is a better word for what I am,” said Lee Parks, the company’s owner. He says he's still reeling from the fire and trying to figure out where to go from here.
The sheriff's office is still investigating the cause of the fire. We don't know for sure yet whether or not it was human-caused.
