Northwest Portland streets closed overnight, 1 person dead in shooting and crash
PORTLAND, Ore. – A deadly shooting and car crash closed a stretch of road in Old Town Portland Thursday night.
The shooting was reported just before 10:30 p.m. at Northwest 6th Avenue and Everett Street. Callers to 911 also said a car had crashed at the intersection of Northwest 5th Avenue and Everett Street.
Authorities were just starting to clear the crash scene around 4:30 a.m. Friday. The streets reopened before 6 a.m.
They said a white Mercury Sedan and a green Ford pickup crashed. The man inside the sedan suffered traumatic injuries.
Portland police said people tried to save the man’s life with CPR, but when medical personnel arrived, they determined he was dead.
Investigators said it appears the incidents are related and they’re looking for more witnesses.
“There is a significant number of people that were around when this event happened and I just want to reiterate that the police bureau is reaching out to them to fill us in on some of the pieces of what occurred,” said Chris Burley from Portland Police Bureau.
The witnesses who have spoken to police said immediately after they heard gunshots, they saw the Mercury drive east, crash into a small power box and then crash into the Ford pickup that was parked on the side of the street.
Officers also found several bullet strikes on a nearby building.
The person inside the pickup truck was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
The medical examiner will perform an autopsy to determine how the man in the Mercury died.
His name will not be released until his family is notified.
Anyone with information should call the Portland police non-emergency line.
Police closed Northwest 4th Avenue to Northwest Broadway and Northwest Davis Street to Northwest Flanders Street.
