No ifs, ands or butts: Bill would make tossing cig stubs a crime
Oregon bill has no butts about it
SALEM, Ore. (AP) A bill in the Oregon Legislature would require smokers to pick up their butts.
It would specify that pitching a butt is a misdemeanor, punishable by a fine or by community service such as picking up cigarette butts.
The Oregonian reports the bill is the brainchild of activist Deb Schallert, who picked up hundreds of butts when she worked in Oregon state parks. This is the third time she's pushed such a bill.
Environmentalists say butts can be hazard filters contain plastics that bird eat and material that could harm aquatic organisms. The Ocean Conservancy says butts are the top litter item in its worldwide beach cleanups.
The measure is sponsored by Democratic Rep. Carolyn Tomei of Milwaukie who says people who smoke should take responsibility for their trash.
