ROSEBURG, Ore. - A man got shot as his nephew went to "fist bump" him while target shooting with a pistol Thursday in the mountains outside Roseburg.
Deputies responded at 1:20 p.m. to Mercy Medical Center after a report of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. The investigation supported the account of the victim and witness, the sheriff said.
According to the sheriff's office, Daniel Karnes, 20, took his uncle David Boyd, 49, target shooting in the Callahans.
The men set up spent shotgun shells as targets and took aim with a .22 caliber Ruger Mark II semi-automatic pistol, the sheriff's office said.
Boyd shot and hit a few of the shells. When Karnes went to fist bump him in congratulations, he saw the gun spin on his uncle's finger towards his abdomen. The gun fired, hitting Boyd.
Karnes drove his uncle to the hospital for help.
