Motorcyclist injured after crashing into bear near Detroit, bear killed

DETROIT, Ore. – A motorcyclist crashed into a black bear north of Detroit Sunday afternoon, fire officials said.

The rider was flown to a hospital and the bear was killed.

According to Idhana-Detroit Rural Fire Protection District, the crash occurred 18 miles north of Detroit on National Forest road 46, also known as Breitenbush Road.

When crews arrived on scene they found a 150- to 200-pound black bear dead in the road. They said the motorcyclist was separated from his motorcycle and lying in the road.

The rider sustained multiple injuries and a helicopter transported the rider to the hospital.

The Marion County Sheriff’s Office said the black bear was in the middle of the road when the motorcyclist crashed into it.

The Idanha-Detroit Fire District thanks the good Samaritans who stopped to help the motorcycle rider.
