WARM SPRINGS, Ore. — Oregon State Police and other emergency personnel responded to a multi-vehicle accident on Saturday night that killed one person and was reportedly caused by a bear.

The crash took place near milepost 80 on Hwy 26 in Warm Springs.

Preliminary investigations reveal that a motorcycle that was being ridden by Rhett Larsen, 39, was traveling east when a large bear ran into his path. Unable to avoid it, he struck the bear, killing the animal.

Larsen was thrown from his motorcycle and struck by a westbound Ford SUV pulling a utility trailer driven by Margaret Sweo, 57. The SUV traveled off the roadway and rolled onto its side. Sweo was transported to a hospital by Life Flight.

Larsen suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The roadway was closed for approximately 6 hours with a detour in place.
