PORTLAND, Ore. - A motorcyclist is dead after driving straight past a yellow right-turn sign and into the side of an apartment in Southeast Portland at about 3 a.m. Thursday.
One police officer described the inside of the apartment as looking like it had been hit by a tornado.
Police on the scene said the motorcycle had to be traveling extremely fast to cause that kind of damage. The man and the motorcycle traveled about 100 feet off the road before they hit the building.
The man was thrown from the motorcycle, which came to rest after hitting a parked vehichle.
The rider, a 34-year-old man, was pronounced dead at the scene. His name will be released once his family is notified. Police didn't know if alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash.
The Portland Police Bureau said it was the fourth traffic fatality in the city in the last 17 days. There was a total of 19 for the entire year before that.
