Man stabbed six times near downtown Eugene bars

EUGENE, Ore. -- A man was stabbed six times at around midnight Friday during a fight downtown, Eugene Police said.

The man, Matthew John Smith, 29, is reported to be in stable condition at Sacred Heart at Riverbend in Springfield.

At around midnight Friday Eugene Police responded to a stabbing reported near the intersection of W Broadway and Olive Streets, close to multiple bars in downtown Eugene.

Police arrived to find Smith bleeding from six stab wounds inflicted during a fight near the intersection.

Sergeant Kyle Williams with the Eugene Police Department told Oregon News Lab reporter Joseph Stefan that Smith was in a fight with one other person.

"I don't know what the reason for the altercation was. They were in some sort of argument," said Sgt. Williams. "We have some investigative leads that we're following up on currently. We do not have anyone in custody and we're not releasing any names at this point."

He was taken to Sacred Heart and treated for the significant, yet non-life threatening injuries.

Anyone with information about the stabbing is asked to call Eugene Police at 541-682-5111.
