SALEM, Ore. -- A man accidentally shot himself in the chest while cleaning out his garage Sunday afternoon, and Salem Police officials said that he is expected to survive.
Police responded to a residential neighborhood in Salem at around 5:45 p.m. Sunday after receiving a call about a gunshot wound. They arrived to find 58-year-old Joe Hernandez in his garage, bleeding from a gunshot wound to his upper abdomen.
It was later found out that the gunshot wound was accidental. Officials said that Hernandez and his wife were cleaning out their garage. They started going through some boxes belonging to the wife's deceased father, one of which contained a loaded gopher gun.
The gopher gun discharged, striking Hernandez in his chest. He was taken to Salem Hospital where he was treated for non-life threatening injuries.
Police said that at this point, the incident appears to be accidental.
