Man dies in crash on Highway 58, involved semi catches fire
PLEASANT HILL, Ore. - A man died in a car crash on Highway 58 Tuesday afternoon when his pickup collided with a semi-truck loaded with tires and computers.
State Police said the crash happened around 5:15 p.m. Tuesday when the man's Dodge pickup crossed the center line of Highway 58 and hit the westbound semi-truck nearly 12 miles east of Pleasant Hill.
The semi was engulfed in flames when officers arrived on-scene.
The semi-truck's driver and passenger were taken to Sacred Heart at Riverbend with some minor crash injuries, state police said.
"The fire from the semi, the heat was so intense it spread to the nearby brush on both the south and north sides of the highway," said State Police Lt. Rob Edwards, who added that firefighters contained both small fires.
Officials closed the highway for several hours while crews worked to contain the fires and reconstruct the crash.
Oregon Department of Transportation officials opened one lane to traffic at around 8 p.m., but said crews would likely remain on-scene for several hours to clear the area.
