Local kids sew pillow cases for deployed soldiers

EUGENE, Ore. - Eight local kids have been working on pillowcases they hope to send overseas to deployed soldiers.

The children get together on the first Saturday of the month to sew with Fredricka Smithies, a sewing teacher. Smithie started the project with one of her students, 11-year-old Katrina.

Katrina in-turn spread the word to her friends, and the Saturday sewing group grew.

Smithies said she's glad to give back to the troops while sharing her passion for sewing with the kids.

"I can't sit around and watch TV and do other things, because sewing is also my passion," said Smithies. "I'm fortunate enough to and pass my knowledge on to some of the girls... and one boy."

The pillow cases will be donated to the 162nd infantry division. If you would like to help out their project with a fabric or financial donation, send Smithies an email at
