Linn County official puts a halt on transfers at reopened log yard

ALBANY, Ore. A Linn County official has ordered a halt to operations at a log transfer yard that was a lumber mill 70 years ago, sat idle for decades and then got busy in October.

County Planning Director Robert Wheeldon said the operation is a heavy industrial use, not allowed on the two-acre site zoned for limited industrial use. The yard created about 30 jobs locally.

The Albany Democrat-Herald reported that trucks deliver logs to the yard east of Albany for reloading onto rail cars, bound for export.

Residents have complained about noise, the early hours and hazards for schoolchildren.

The Albany & Eastern Railroad contends the yard run by a Rainier company can operate as long as an appeal to the county commissioners is filed on time in January.
