EUGENE, Ore. - The Sheldon Irish won the state football championship last season, and the band played on.
When the Irish take the field at Dennis Ludwig Stadium September 6 for their first home game, the soundtrack will come courtesy of the Sheldon High School band.
The band started 2 weeks of preparation for the coming season. The work they put in now sets the stage for halftime shows, fight songs and other performances.
From drums to tubas, saxophones to trumpets, the units that make up the band are serious about putting on a good show.
"For a lot of us, it's our life," said Alex Nelson. "We say music is our life, but it's true because we put so much time and effort into it. It wouldn't be worth it if it wasn't our life.
"I think a lot of people don't realize how much work goes into it," Nelson added. "Once they find out, they're very surprised and have a lot more respect for us."
The band plans to sell concessions at the Oregon Duck's opening football game Saturday as a fundraiser.
