Lane County Courthouse Update
EUGENE, Ore.- An empty lot on Oak Street and 8th Avenue in Downtown Eugene is now waiting for a deed agreement for it to be converted into the new Lane County Courthouse.
Earlier this month, a petition was made for a judge to review the historic Skinner family land deed.
The deed controls whether a land exchange is made between the City of Eugene and Lane County.
Officials hope to build a new city hall on the county's butterfly lot, with a new county courthouse going up at the vacant lot that used to be city hall.
Laura Hammond, communication and policy analyst for the city of Eugene, says they are optimistic to move forward by the end of the year.
“I am probably more excited about the idea of having a civic square back," said Hammond. "I think that is going to be a unique and important place in our community to gather and be together. And having a city hall at the center of your community is kind of natural fit, so it's exciting to see that move forward.
There is currently no blue prints or plans for either buildings both are waiting for the deed to be reviewed.
