Junction City man who shot, killed friend while camping sentenced to 16 months
EUGENE, Ore. -- Joshua Montez, the Junction City man who shot and killed his friend while camping in July of last year, was sentenced to 16 months in prison on Wednesday.
Montez was arrested in July after the Lane County Sheriff's Office said he was camping at Mona Campground with his friend, Steven "Troy" Moody, and their families.
Montez woke up to loud noises he believed were gunshots, stepped from his tent, and shot at a figure he saw in the campground.
That figure was identified as Moody, who was pronounced dead at the hospital.
According to court documents, on Wednesday Montez was found guilty of criminally negligent homicide.
He was sentenced to 16 months in prison after taking a plea deal.
