EUGENE, Ore. - Private Taylor Hayden thought the smoke was from a backyard barbecue, but her gut told her to check it out.
As she got closer to the fence at the back of the parking lot behind the Army recruiting office in North Eugene, she saw the smoke got bigger.
"I looked over the fence and it was just bursting in flames," Hayden said. "I called my sergeant over, and he told me to get the fire extinguisher."
The soldiers lept into action, knocking down the flames before firefighters arrived.
No one was injured.
"Just really glad everything worked out and Private Hayden was aware of her surrounds and had that gut feeling so that was good," Staff Sgt. Fred Nelson said.
