Home invasion in south Eugene: 'He had a shotgun pointed at me'
EUGENE, Ore. -- A college student living in south Eugene woke up early Friday morning to see a man standing by his bed holding a shotgun, Eugene police said.
Officers responded to the house near 27th and Lawrence at around 3:20 a.m. Friday after getting a call of an armed burglary in progress.
One of the residents, Jed Gleasman, said his roommate called in the robbery after hearing the suspect cock a pump-action shotgun.
"Basically I was woken up to somebody in the room telling me to get on the floor he had a shotgun pointed at me," Gleasman told KVAL News.
Officials reported that after law enforcement arrived on scene, two Eugene police went inside and found a man standing on a stairwell, holding a shotgun.
Police ordered the man, later identified as 19-year-old Brandon Gerdes, to put down his gun. Gerdes dropped the shotgun and ran to a nearby balcony and jumped , officials said.
Eugene police and a Springfield police K-9 unit set up a perimeter and started a search for the suspect.
Nearby neighbor Don St. Clair saw Gerdes as he tried to flee the scene.
"He ran through that gate, hopped (a fence) over here," said St. Clair. " A neighbor across the street was up and saw him trying to open cars, trying to find a car to jump in and steal."
After searching the surrounding area, officials said a tip from a neighbor led them to find Gerdes hiding on a neighboring roof.
Gerdes came down from the roof after police ordered him to come down, Eugene police said.
After placing him under arrest, Gerdes was treated for some injures he received when fleeing from officers. He was lodged at the Lane County Jail.
Officials said they haven't charged Gerdes yet as they are continuing to investigate the incident.
Gleasman said he's still trying to find out why he and his three roommates were targeted.
"I even asked him .. why he was doing this and, I mean, there's got to be a reason. It had to be thought out a little bit," said Gleasman. He added that Gerdes didn't give him an answer.
