Truck crash sets forest on fire near Santiam Pass; check for delays
SISTERS, Ore. - A truck crashed and caught fire, igniting a brush fire and for a time closing a major route between the southern Willamette Valley and Central Oregon on Tuesday afternoon.
The emergency response closed Highway 126 in both directions near the Santiam Junction with Highway 20.
"Forest Service is on scene now working on the fire that spread from the truck," Oregon DOT staff said as the situation took shape around 5 p.m. "Travelers should avoid the area."
The cause of the crash is not yet known.
The load caught fire and spread to nearby vegetation.
Forest Service firefighters responded and put out the blaze, according to ODOT.
The road reopened to some traffic around 9 p.m. Tuesday.
ODOT planned to have flaggers on scene overnight as there is still debris in the roadway.
More cleanup was planned for Wednesday morning.
Travelers should be prepared for delays.
