Flags mark 3 years since Officer Kilcullen's death

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. - Three years ago Tuesday, Officer Chris Kilcullen died after pursuing an erratic motorist along a stretch of freeway that now carries his name.

A single bullet from the gun of driver Cheryl Kidd claimed Kilcullen's life, investigators said.

The motorcycle officer tried to pull Kidd over in Eugene and pursued her into Springfield, where she shot and killed him as he approached her car, investigators said.

Kidd has been deemed mentally unfit to stand trial.

Flags flew in his honor along the Chris Kilcullen Memorial Highway, the route along which he pursued Kidd.
