'Fire will spread quickly through this building because of its construction'
CRESWELL, Ore. - Firefighters responded to a report of a fire in an old wooden building with apartments and businesses on Mill Street on Wednesday afternoon.
Once everyone was out of the building, Chief John Wooten with South Lane Fire made the call to fight the fire from the exterior.
"We opted just for firefighter safety just to keep all of our folks out," Wooten said. "Fire will spread quickly through this building because of its construction."
The initial call came in at 4:30 p.m. reporting fire on the second floor.
Firefighters from Eugene Springfield Fire, Pleasant Hill-Goshen and North Douglas Fire responded to assist.
Wooten said his department had encountered a fire in the building before; he described the interior of the second floor as a "labyrinth."
The cause of the fire and the extent of the damage is not yet known.
"The inside of the building's got severe fire damage," Wooten said. "The roof is in to the second floor."
He expected crews to be on scene through the night and into Thanksgiving.
