HARRISBURG, Ore. -- Fire burned through an animal feed mill at the Smucker Pelleting on Wednesday morning, sending up a large plume of smoke from the rural building outside of Harrisburg.The owner said no one was inside the warehouse when employees found the fire at around 6 a.m. Wednesday morning.Crews from Eugene/Springfield Fire were called out to the mill off of Powerline Road to assist Lane Rural and Harrisburg Departments in dousing the flames.Officials haven't determined what caused the fire.Harrisburg firefighters had responded to the building Tuesday night after employees noticed some smoldering materials.
They spent 2 hours there before being called out for a medical emergency.
"To my understanding they were told by the owner they could go ahead and leave," said Chief John Goucher. "They had it under control, and so they left, went on the other call, and probably there was still something smoldering."Smucker Pelleting, a company producing animal food pellets, has been at that location off of Powerline Road for about 15 years. The owner plans to rebuild the mill.
