Fire burns addition behind Springfield house

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. -- Fire crews rescued two dogs from a house fire in Springfield Saturday night that nearly destroyed a stand-alone addition to the home.

Crews were called out a house off of Mohawk Blvd. at around 6:50 p.m. after neighbors reported flames had spread to the interior.

"It appears that the fire started outside the structure, and then got in to the eaves and then in to the structure," said Battalion Chief Dana Burdwell. "It got quite a good start before the neighbors in the next street over saw it in their backyard."

Inspectors are still trying to figure out what caused the fire at the addition behind a house near M St. and Market St.

Crews at the scene said that no one was home when the fire started. Two dogs were rescued from inside the structure, Burdwell said.
