Farm to fork with Teen Chef program: 'Eat fresh food'
EUGENE, Ore. - Young people got down and dirty Friday to learn learned firsthand that not everything you eat is fast food.
Teen Chef is a program aimed at kids in affordable housing in Eugene, connecting garden-fresh ingredients with cooking lessons.
"If you don't eat fresh food," Xavier Wilson said, "you're not going to get very healthy."
Fifteen young people, ages 11 to 16, took part in the 3rd annual Teen Chef program coordinated by Cornerstone Community Housing and Food for Lane County on Friday at the Grassroots Garden off Coburg Road.
The goal: teach kids the "farm to fork" concept so they can appreciate - and prepare - fresh food.
Step one: the youth harvested onions, tomatoes, basil, cucumbers and green peppers.
Then they prepared food using those ingredients in the program's outdoor kitchen.
