HARRISBURG, Ore. - Hurd's Hardware Store has served Harrisburg since 1947.
Take a side door, however, and you'll find a different place.
At Hurd's Custom Machinery, they make specialized farm equipment, trailers - and for 35 years, bomb disposal units.
They've built 118 of the $40,000 to $50,000 chambers used by bomb squads to detonate explosives. Past customers include the Eugene Police, Oregon State Police and the U.S. military.
Mike Hurd is the third generation to run the business.
"It's very unique for Harrisburg and for the area, but it's a good fit for us because we build unusual type of equipment," he said.
Hurd said the bomb units and trailers have been shipped to virtually all 50 states, plus Iraq and other points around the globe.
"We've got two other ones in India," Hurd said. "We've also got them scattered around Saudi Arabia, Indonesia."
The 119th bomb disposal unit from Hurds will ship to India.
"We take pride in the fact that we build a piece of equipment that helps keep the bomb techs across the world safe," Hurd said.
