Eugene Police: Man dies after reports of assault in downtown alley

EUGENE, Ore. -- A man died in the hospital Wednesday morning after police received reports that he was assaulted in an alley near downtown Eugene.Eugene Police received reports around 7:30 a.m. Wednesday about an assault in an alley near 6th and Lawrence.Responding bicycle officers found the man on the ground. The man, later identified as Dean Eric Sweeden, 23, was taken to the hospital where he later died, Eugene Police Lieutenant Scott Fellman said.Lt. Fellman said police believe the man was homeless. They are still looking into what caused the man's death.The Eugene Police Violent Crimes Unit and Forensic Evidence Unit are looking into the man's death.Anyone with information related to the case is asked to call (541) 682-5111.
