EUGENE, Ore. – The debate over what to do with Broadway Plaza in downtown Eugene continued Wednesday.

The Eugene City Council approved a motion to start the process of renaming the space to Kesey Square, in honor of Ken Kesey.

Kesey graduated from Springfield High School and the University of Oregon and later lived in Pleasant Hill.

Previously, its official name was Broadway Plaza, according to City of Eugene spokesperson Jan Bohman.

Another motion was passed to consider the possible rezoning of the property from a commercial space to a public space.

City councilors also discussed ways to make the area more family-friendly. They talked about adding more structures for housing food carts and a retractable covered space.

Right now, there is no date set on when the plaza will be renamed.
