EUGENE, Ore. - Halloween may be over, but the skulls and masks will be out Friday for the Day of the Dead festival at River Road Elementary School.
"We're having lots of activites for the kids," said Maja Martir with the River Road Parent Club. "We're going to be making tissue paper for flowers and decorating these beautiful masks that the kids can decorate."
The kids spent weeks getting ready for Friday's event. Organizers said the celebration allows students to undertand the Mexican view of life and death.
"It helps them understand because they brought pictures or something that person liked and put it in the altars that they have in the classrooms," said Lilliana Forsman, a teacher assistant.
And since it was more like a fiesta, they made sure guests stayed entertained.
"We have sugar skulls that the kids can decorate with colorful fun puffy paints and glitter," Martir said. "We'll also have a tortilla making station where kids can come and make their own tortillas."
The event starts at 7 p.m. Friday.
