ELKTON, Ore. -- If you travel Highway 38 take note: The Elk Creek Tunnel between Elkton and Drain will be closed during the night and early morning hours for the next few months starting on Sunday.
The tunnel on Highway 38 will be closed 5 nights a week for up to the next three months.
Dan Latham from ODOT says there is some good news though. "We want to keep traffic impacts to a minimum, so we're going to do most of the work at night, but when we do that we have to close the tunnel," he said.
ODOT has set up a detour for drivers that will be traveling through the area. "We're encouraging people to take Highway 138 West from Elkton to Sutherlin and onto I-5," Latham said.
ODOT says the goal is to finish lining the tunnel, which was started back in the 1990s. "The complete liner in the tunnel helps prevent any small rocks from falling down," said Latham. "This is the only tunnel in Oregon that isn't fully lined yet."
While the closure is at night, Latham says you can expect some daytime delays. "It will be fully closed at night, but during the daytime we're going to have some single lane closures, so there may be some delays too."
ODOT plans to have this project completed by Memorial Day Weekend.
