EUGENE, Ore. - A Lane County Sheriff's deputy hit by a speeding car while on vacation in Mexico has been moved from San Diego to a long-term care facility in Portland.
Deputy Drew Wattier and his wife, Michelle, were seriously injured November 30 when a car hit them as they stood outside their hotel in Los Cabos, Mexico.
The two were transported back to the U.S. a few days after the accidnet. They have been at UC San Diego Medical Center, where Michelle remains. She is awake and able to converse with doctors and family members, the sheriff's office.
"While Drew is not yet awake, he is making what appear to be deliberate body movements and occasionally opening his eyes," the sheriff's office said in a press release. "We are told that these are good signs, but that he has a long road of rehabilitation and recovery ahead of him."
Michelle Wattier is expected to return to Oregon in the coming weeks to continue rehabilitation.
The family maintains a Facebook page to update people on the Wattiers.
Family and supporters are also raising money for the Wattiers. Donations can be made at TeamWattier.com or at any Selco Credit Union.
