Customers do a double take at optometrist's office

EUGENE, Ore. - Clients of a local optometrist were hardly able to recognize employees on Thursday, and it wasn't because their prescriptions were off.

Employee Monica Shepard helped staff at Eyemart Express spend the day getting into the Halloween spirit.

"It's fun being green for a day," chuckles Lacey Nagel, an employee all decked out as Theodora the witch in the updated 2013 movie "Oz: The Great and Powerful."

The store was transformed into the land of Oz... new era and the classic 1939 motion picture characters.

At least 8 employees had a ball in their elaborate costumes. The talented costume designer Monica Shephard dressed up as China Girl.

"This took quite a while. I paper mached her out of paper towel rolls," explained Monica Shepard, her voice muffled behind a thick mask.

She starts working on her creations weeks in advance. Tin Man, Scarecrow, Glenda the good witch - no one is left out.

Employee Nagel, dressed up as the witch Theodora (in the updated 2013 movie) gives Shepard big kudos.

"She's been really good about getting all these costumes ready and stuff, so we've enjoyed it," says Nagel.

Naturally, the chief optometrist is never left out, not if you're dressed as the great "Oz."

Dr. Gerald Shepard tells KVAL News, "Well, the only thing that people ask me sometimes is 'are you really a doctor?'"

Monica Shepard tells me she's already planning for Halloween 2014. The costume theme could be the Mad Hatter's tea party from Alice in Wonderland.
