COOS BAY, Ore. -- Thanks to a new program, the first newborn of the year at Bay Area Hospital has a safe place to sleep.

Baby Carpender arrived at 4:46 Tuesday morning.

Not only is he said to be the first newborn of the year in Coos County, but he gets to go home with the first “baby sleep box.”

Baby boxes are infant-sized boxes with small mattresses inside where the baby can sleep.

Bay Area Hospital is launching the program this year to help bring awareness to an important fact - a cluttered sleeping area for a baby can potentially cause suffocation.

"The idea originated in Finland, and it's to help promote a safe sleeping environment for all newborns and bring awareness to the fact that infants should not co-sleep with parents," said Bay Area Hospital Nurse Denise Partney.

She says the goal is to provide safe sleep boxes to all of the babies born at BAH this year.
