EUGENE, Ore. - A convicted rapist who allegedly threatened to kill his elderly parents with an AK-47 will serve almost 10 years in federal prison for illegally possessing the weapon and ammunition.
U.S. District Chief Judge Ann Aiken sentenced Michael Dean Wasson, 53, to the maximum possible sentence of 113 months and 15 days.
Wasson has multiple prior felony convictions, including first degree rape, the U.S. Attorney said.
Felons are typically barred from possessing firearms.
Oregon State Police and the Lane County Sheriff's Office responded to a report June 29, 2012, that Wasson was threatening to kill his parents and carrying a gun. Officers arrived on scene and found wasson carrying a loaded AK-47 semiautomatic rifle.
As he turned towards officers with the gun, a state trooper fire a shot at Wasson, who dropped the weapon.
