College Hill Reservoir closed to public June 27 to July 7

EUGENE, Ore. - The Eugene Water & Electric Board will close College Hill Reservoir to the public starting Friday to reduce the likelihood of damage from fireworks.

Since the reservoir started operating in 1939, Eugene residents have used it and the surrounding open space as an unofficial park for picnics, star-gazing and bicycle riding, EWEB said.

But fireworks lit off from the top of the reservoir in 2010, 2011 and 2012 caused damage to the rubberized coating on the surface of the reservoir.

In years past, EWEB banned all fireworks from the reservoir in an attempt to prevent damage.

EWEB closed the reservoir to the public last Fourth of July to prevent damage from fireworks.

Legal fireworks can still be used on the blacktop surface of the old reservoir to the north of the College Hill structure.

The reservoir will reopen to the public on July 7.
