City Council votes to officially change name of Broadway Plaza to Kesey Square
EUGENE, Ore. - Broadway Plaza downtown has a new name.
The Eugene City Council voted 5 to 1 Wednesday to change the name of the plaza on the corner of Broadway and Willamette Street downtown to "Kesey Square."
The plaza has long informally gone by Kesey Plaza or Kesey Square.
That name comes from a statue of author and counterculture icon Ken Kesey reading to children that is located there.
This formal decision came after a period of public comment and review by a naming committee formed by Mayor Lucy Vinis. The committee recommended the name change in a 7 to 2 vote.
Google Maps uses both names.
