Brawl at state pen on eve of Independence Day
SALEM, Ore. - Visiting the Oregon State Penitentiary is canceled until further notice after a fight involving more than two dozen inmates Wednesday.
At 12:20 p.m., approximately 30 inmates were involved in an altercation in the dining room, prompting penitentiary officials to place the institution on lockdown.
No one required outside medical treatment.
An investigation is being conducted to determine the cause of the incident.
The state pen is Oregon's oldest correctional institution. It houses approximately 2,000 adults in custody and is the state's only maximum security prison.
