Boys face arson charges after fire in bushes outside Eugene home
EUGENE, Ore. - Two 12-year-old boys face arson charges after a fire burned a row of arborvitae bushes next to the garage of a Eugene home Wednesday, the Eugene-Springfield Fire Department said Thursday.
The flames spread rapidly in the hot, dry conditions and spread to the exterior wall of the home, firefighters said.
Crews arrived on scene to find neighbors fighting the flames with garden hoses.
Neighbors had also made sure the building was evacuated.
"They deserve a lot of credit for their quick action and quick thinking and literally saved the house from being more involved than what is currently suffered," Cpt. Mike Montgomery said at the scene.
Fire marshals investigated. They determined two boys playing with fire had sparked the blaze, the fire department said.
