EUGENE, Ore. - For millions of Americans, shopping on Thanksgiving is now a tradition. Some Eugene area stores opened their doors on Thursday in anticipation for Black Friday around the nation, and others plan to open up later on Thursday evening.

In Eugene, the Valley River Center will be open from 6 p.m. to midnight on Thursday, giving eager shoppers a chance to get a head start on their Christmas list.

At least 50 people lined up outside of Best Buy before they opened on Thursday afternoon, nearly all of them vying for the same flat screen TV. Many of them said that they just couldn't beat the deal.

Outside of Game Stop on Gateway, about a dozen people lined up for some discounted video games.

A lot of the people who were braving the rush on Thursday said they had never done it before, but this year they saw some unbeatable deals and just didn't want to miss out.

"It's just a screaming deal, honestly," said Chris Roberts, who was in line at Best Buy. "And honestly, I expected it to be a lot worse, for it to be a lot more packed. Everyone's been pretty clam and pretty civil, so that's good."

Some people adapted for the deals, having their Thanksgiving dinner on Wednesday night so they could focus on shopping Thursday. Others, however, will plan to see family and friends later in the night after they've taken advantage of the holiday deals.
