EUGENE, Ore. - Rain ushered in the "unofficial start to summer" at a popular open air pool.
Amazon Pool was set to open at 2 p.m. on Monday, June 16.
The City had announced the opening a week earlier, when mostly sunny 76F warmed the southern Willamette Valley.
A week later: 58F, with showers washing over enough of western Oregon to keep the pavement wet.
Not to fear: sun and 70s return by Wednesday.
There is a slight chance of rain by the end of the week.
But free is a very good price: On Friday, all three City pools will open their doors to the public admission-free for a portion of the day.
The free swim period at Amazon Pool starts at 2 p.m. and continues until 6 p.m.
The pool is expected to draw more than 1,500 visitors that day.
The pool attracts 150,000 visits from June through September, according to the City of Eugene.
The City's two other pools are open year-round.
Echo Hollow Pool and Fitness Center, 1655 Echo Hollow Rd., has an indoor and outdoor pool.
The free swim on June 20 at Echo Hollow Pool will be from 1:10-3:40 p.m.
Sheldon Pool and Fitness Center, 2443 Willakenzie Rd., has one indoor pool.
The free swim on June 20 at Sheldon pool from 1:40-3:40 p.m.
Amazon Pool is located at 2600 Hilyard St.
The pool features a 50-meter, eight-lane pool, diving boards, a water slide, a shallow pool and family changing rooms.
During heavy use times, such as recreational swims, more than 25 lifeguards may be on duty, the city said.
