Amateur radio has a Field Day

They call it a hobby, a passion and a public service.

Amateur radio enthusiasts gathered Saturday at Eugene's Science Factory as part of the 2013 Field Day exercises. They were members of the Valley Radio Club. Field Day is the single most popular on-the-air event held each June in the U.S. and Canada. Field Day is a combination contest among clubs and emergency exercises for the radio operators.

The contest part is to contact as many other stations as possible and to learn to operate radio gear in less than ideal conditions. Amateur radio people are well known for their communications support in real disaster and post-disaster situations.

Well over 30 ham radio operators took part in the Field Day exercises in Eugene.
