2 dead, 2 injured in crash west of Salem on Hwy 22

SALEM, Ore. - Two people died and 2 others suffered injuries in a 2-car crash west of Salem on Tuesday afternoon.

The crash happened around 1 p.m. as a Buick driven by Sylvester Cooper Jr., 90, of Amity made a left turn into a restaurant parking lot, Oregon State Police said.

An oncoming Dodge van driven by Jutta Wilson, 75, hit the Buick on the passenger side as the car crossed oncoming traffic.

Cooper suffered serious injuries in the crash. He was transported by ambulance to Salem Hospital where he was in critical condition, police said.

The crash killed his wife, 91-year-old Elizabeth Carolyn Cooper.

Sylvester Cooper died from his injuries Wednesday at Salem Hospital.

Jutta and her passenger, 79-year-old Marvin Wilson, were taken by ambulance with injuries not believed to be life-threatening.

State police said the crash remains under investigation.
