EUGENE, Ore. - Public school teachers spend an average of $1,000 a year each out of their own pockets to supply their classrooms.
OfficeMax just took over that burden for the year from two Eugene 4J School District teachers.
The retailer's "A Day Made Better" program awarded $1,000 worth of supplies to Deanna Olson at Spring Creek Elementary; and Catherine Kotlarek-James at Adams Elementary.
Olson has taught at Spring Creek for 14 years but it is in her first year teaching 3rd grade. She has 31 students in her classroom and said the supplies are sorely needed.
