1 dead, 2 taken to hospitals by helicopters after head-on crash on Oregon highway

DIAMOND LAKE, Ore. - An Idaho man died when an oncoming pickup crossed the center line and collided with a sedan Friday morning near Diamond Lake, Oregon State Police said.

Two other people involved in the crash were taken to Oregon hospitals from the scene by helicopter.

The emergency response and investigation closed Oregon Highway 230 just south of the intersection with Oregon Highway 138 in eastern Douglas County. One lane opened to traffic at 3 p.m.

The preliminary investigation found that a 2007 Chevrolet Silverado towing a utility trailer crossed into oncoming traffic and collided head-on with a 2006 Kia Amanti, police said.

The driver of the Amanti - identified as William Hunter Houff, 56, of Idaho Falls - died at the scene. His body was taken to Wilson Chapel of the Roses in Roseburg.

Houff's passenger - identified as Lisa Barnett Carr, 54, of Idaho Falls - suffered serious injuries, police said. She was taken by helicopter to Sacred Heart Medical Center at RiverBend.

The driver of the Chevy - identified as Mark Andrew Root, 49, of Eagle Point - was taken by helicopter to a hospital in Bend with serious injuries.

All lanes reopened to traffic shortly before 5 p.m. Friday.
